Question of the month:

I want a spiritual director. Not just any spiritual director. Now, how do I ensure that happens?

In a related note, I decided to sign up for the San Antonio Catholic Women’s Conference. My pastor is giving a talk on spiritual direction. He’s too busy to be my spiritual director. In fact, all the priests I would like to be my spiritual director are too busy.

Hi, Angela,
Finding a spiritual director can sometimes be so difficult! It took me a long time to find one. One thing that I found helpful was getting to know different religious in the area. Many sisters in San Antonio are trained in spiritual direction – especially those who work in formation. For instance, my spiritual director in San Antonio is an Ursaline Sister who works with pre-novices in her congregation.

Of course it goes without saying that prayer is essential in finding a good spiritual director … The Spirit will guide you in the right direction.

Finding the right spiritual director takes time. Decide what you want in a director: male/female, clergy/lay, faith community (ie Methodist, Episcopalian, Catholic, etc), directive/non-directive, face-to-face/phone/ internet direction, etc. Go to the Spiritual Director’s International website and look for the Seek And Find Guide (http://www.sdiworld.org/seekfindguide.html) –a list of directors by location. You may be able to narrow the search by reading each director’s bio. Call several directors to discuss what you’re looking for in a director and choose one. Directors realize that such an intimate relationship must be a good fit for both of you. Agree to meet at least 2-3 times (once a month is the norm) and then assess whether to continue direction with that person. You may change directors a couple times before you find what you’re looking for. Feel free to email me with more questions. I am a spiritual director and am familiar with the process. Good luck! P.S. Don’t forget to pray! Ask God to send the director you need.

Hi, Angela,

In response to your comment on my blog…
Yes… it is really exciting that I will soon go back to doing active ministry!!! There are so many things that I miss. However, it’s been good to have the time away from all the responsibilities solely to concentrate on this call and this vocation.
Ministry for me in the coming year will be on a volunteer basis and a little bit here & there. First, I will be helping out at Catholic Social Action. Check out their website at: http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/socialaction/index.html
I will be working with parishes and on programming that helps people become more aware of Catholic Social Teaching and its implications. Very cool.
Also, I will be working with seniors at UD who wish to become committed/vowed lay Marianists. There is a formation program here for young lay people who wish to embody the Marianist charism and become a part of a community. I’m looking forward to this for a number of reasons. One of which being that I enjoy working with college students… especially those serious about their faith!
I will also be taking on the role of Regional Coordinator for the Marianist LIFE South program. Are you familiar with LIFE? If not, visit: http://www.marianist.com/ministries.php?pid=47
And… in my spare time, I’m also taking a grad class at UD. The course is entitled “Leadership in Community.” GREAT class that works with local neighborhoods in assessment, goals and improvement strategies.
So… needless to say… I’m going to be a VERY BUSY woman!! Pray for me! :) {I’ll write about it all on my blog soon}
